“Shapes rather than words link the two shows at Michael Warren Contemporary. Jeff Horton's Filling the Void sprawls across the front spaces. It's dominated by paintings that bear a relationship to geometric abstraction but differ from the classic approach in a number of ways. Although the paintings are made up of lines, stripes and bars, all of which are roughly straight, as would be typical in mathematical painting, Horton has not carried them out precisely. Instead, there’s an unexpected expressionistic quality to the paint work, with skips and smears. It turns out that Horton uses oil paints mixed with wax, making it easier for him to add and remove passages as he goes along. There are definitely types of structures being depicted, like skeletal industrial facilities. While these buildings are not rendered accurately and their actual shape is impossible to make out, Horton does begin with tiny photos of actual things, such as details of the armatures of grain elevators or the cages around oil storage tanks. Using the steel frameworks as starting points, he then extends the elements until they cover the surfaces of his typically large paintings. The architectonic imagery is no accident for Horton, instead reflecting a lifelong interest: He's a partner in an architecture firm.” Paglia, Michael.
